The ball is the last piece of your simulator most people think about and the first one your launch monitor actually sees. Every number on the screen starts as a measurement of a ball leaving a club face. Change the ball and you change the measurement, even though nothing about your swing or your equipment has moved.
This matters more indoors than out. On a real course the ball tells you the truth by landing somewhere. In a simulator the ball travels a few feet into a screen, and everything after that is calculated from what happened in the first moments of flight. The ball is part of the measurement chain, not just the thing you hit.

One model, in similar condition, every session. Mixed balls make your gapping numbers meaningless even if every individual ball is a good one. -

Camera systems look at the actual ball, so its surface and orientation matter. Radar systems indoors usually need help measuring spin, because the ball stops flying too soon. -
Limited flight and foam balls solve a safety problem, not an accuracy problem
Club data survives them. Ball flight data does not.
Why the Ball Changes Your Numbers
Two pieces of construction do most of the work.
The core sets how much the ball compresses at impact. Range balls are built with firmer, denser cores so they survive being hit thousands of times, which limits compression and reduces the energy transferred into the ball. Less compression means less ball speed.
The cover sets how much the ball grips the face. Premium balls use a thin urethane cover that grabs and generates spin. Range balls use a thicker, harder cover, usually Surlyn, which slides more and produces less spin, less consistently.
Neither of these is a defect. A range ball is engineered for durability, and it is very good at that. It is simply answering a different question than the one your launch monitor is asking.
What the Testing Actually Shows
Two published comparisons are worth knowing about, because they agree on the important part and disagree on a detail that turns out to be the real finding.
Foresight Sports compared range balls against a premium tour ball on a GCQuad. With a driver the premium ball produced higher ball speeds and about 9 yards more carry. With irons the range ball's spin was moderately lower, flattening the flight and costing 1 to 2 yards of carry. With wedges the range ball generated roughly 60% less backspin, which cost around 15 yards of carry and most of the ball's ability to stop.
Golf Laboratories ran the same question through a swing robot, which removes the golfer from the comparison entirely. With a driver the range ball was about 12 yards shorter with double the lateral dispersion. With a 5 iron it was about 8 yards shorter, and its distance band was four times larger. With a pitching wedge it produced half the spin of the premium ball and finished about 4 yards longer.
Notice that the two tests point opposite directions on wedge distance. That is not a contradiction to resolve, it is the answer. Strip half the spin out of a wedge shot and where the ball finishes stops being predictable. Gene Parente of Golf Laboratories put the spread plainly: some shots lost only 2 or 3 yards, others lost 25.
The consistent finding across both tests is dispersion, not distance. The range ball was not just shorter, it was three to four times less repeatable. In a simulator, where you are usually trying to learn something from the numbers, that is the part that costs you.
What Your Launch Monitor Needs From the Ball

Camera (photometric) systems
These photograph the ball directly, so what the ball looks like is part of the measurement.
- Use a clean, white ball. Dirt and scuffing degrade the images the system is reading.
- Use a ball with a logo or a drawn alignment line, and set it facing the unit. Manufacturer guidance is that this improves spin readings specifically.
- Some camera systems read spin without any marking at all. Check what yours asks for rather than assuming, because the answer varies by manufacturer and by model.
Radar (Doppler) systems
These measure the ball by tracking it through flight, which is exactly what a simulator does not give them. Indoors the ball is into the screen in a fraction of a second, and spin is the number that suffers.
Two ways around it:
- Metallic marker dots. Small reflective stickers applied to the ball give the radar something to track. They work, and they are cheap, but they wear and peel and need reapplying, and some systems want the dot oriented a particular way on every shot.
- Radar capture balls. These are premium balls with a reflective marker printed on an inner layer, invisible from the outside. Because the marker is internal, the ball needs no orientation and plays identically to its standard version. The original of these was introduced in 2021 and claimed spin measurement indoors within 15 rpm of the same ball's outdoor readings.
If you have a radar unit and you have never marked a ball, your indoor spin numbers are the ones to distrust first.
Limited Flight and Foam Balls
These exist because a full speed golf ball in a room that is too small, or too close to something breakable, is a genuine hazard. On that job they work.
What they cannot do is give you real ball data. Both radar and camera systems will happily read a foam ball, because neither has any idea what kind of ball it is looking at. They will report what they measured, and what they measured was a ball that flies nothing like a golf ball.
- Foam and limited flight balls are designed to travel a fraction of a real ball's distance. One common type is built to fly about a third as far.
- One popular practice ball is not a sphere at all but a hollow cylinder, which generates lift by a different mechanism entirely and travels up to about 40 yards on a full swing.
- Expect lower carry and lower spin across the board, and expect the gap to widen as you move from wedges up to driver.
Club data is the part that survives. Club path, face angle, and attack angle are measured before the ball goes anywhere, so they remain useful. Treat the ball flight numbers as unusable rather than as numbers needing a correction factor, because the error is not a constant you can subtract.
If safety is forcing this choice, the honest framing is that you have a swing trainer rather than a measurement tool. That is still worth having. It is just worth knowing which one you own.
Choosing and Looking After a Simulator Ball
Pick one model and stay on it. Gapping is a comparison exercise. The moment the ball becomes a variable, the comparison stops working. This matters more than whether the model you picked is the best one available.
Match your outdoor ball if the simulator is for practice transfer. If you are building yardages you intend to use on a course, hitting the ball you actually play removes a translation step.
Retire scuffed balls earlier than you would outdoors. A camera system is reading the ball's surface, and screen impacts mark balls quickly. A ball that is fine to play a round with may already be feeding your monitor worse images.
Buy in quantity and keep them together. A dozen balls of the same model, bought at the same time, aged at the same rate, is a more consistent set than a bucket of mixed premium balls in varying condition.
If the simulator is purely for entertainment, none of this is urgent. Playing a course with friends does not need repeatable spin data. Match the effort to what you are actually using the room for.
